Important: This resource is for education and preparation only. If you are worried, speak to a healthcare professional or trusted adult.

What to prepare

A small period kit can include pads, spare underwear, wipes or tissues, a small bag for used items, and a note with what to do if a period starts at school or away from home.

What to explain

Explain that periods are normal, bleeding may feel surprising at first, and it is okay to ask for help. Avoid making it secretive, shameful or scary.

Useful reassurance

The first period may be light, brownish, red or irregular. It may not follow a predictable pattern straight away.

When to ask for help

If pain is severe, bleeding soaks through products quickly, dizziness occurs, or the young person feels very distressed, speak to a trusted adult and consider medical advice.
